Our history in a few dates

August 3, 1981

Two young, freshly-qualified doctors (Paul Leroy and Etienne Laurent), soon joined by a physiotherapist (Marc Hombergen), decided that the time had come to move away from solo practice and towards integrated care, bringing together front-line healthcare professionals in a single structure, on an equal footing, in a neighborhood where such provision meets the needs of the population. The Maison Médicale Esseghem officially opens at 169, rue Jules Lahaye: a doctor's surgery, a physiotherapist's office and a waiting room - the essentials to get you started.

1983

Maison Médicale Esseghem becomes a non-profit association

Launch of a C.S.T. (Cadre Spécial Temporaire - Temporary Special Framework) project, enabling us to hire a psychologist (Martine Mertens) and a social worker (André Petit) for one year to carry out a specific study of the neighborhood.

Expansion of the team with the arrival of a speech therapist (Françoise Luyckx) and a dentist (Daniel Poncin).

1985

Marc Hombergen asks to manage the Maison Médicale on a part-time basis. A physiotherapist (Christine Rey) was hired to replace him, and a third doctor was recruited
1988.

In view of the team's expansion, we discussed the advisability of changing premises (i.e. building on a neighboring plot of wasteland at 24 rue Esseghem). Opinions differ. Etienne Laurent leaves the Maison Médicale.

1990

Moving into our new premises at 24 rue Esseghem, the construction of which was not without its difficulties and setbacks.

April 1, 1992

After long and difficult discussions about the operating system for the home, the team decided to switch to a lump-sum payment system, which we believe offers patients better access to care.

The team is changing and expanding, and now includes a receptionist, a social worker, speech therapists, dentists (already a psychologist? to be checked), new physiotherapists and doctors.

1994

Conclusion of a discussion on wages. Establishment of a payment scale for workers.

1995

Opening of a branch of the Maison Médicale in Berchem-Sainte-Agathe (Hunderenveld buildings): the Maison Médicale Kattebroek, initially with a mixed team of MME workers and new recruits.

1997

Creation of the non-profit organization Maison Médicale Kattebroek.

1998

Purchase of the land adjoining the Maison Médicale Esseghem on rue de la Bravoure, which housed an abandoned building, and of a house on avenue du Roi Albert, intended to accommodate the Maison Médicale Kattebroek team.

Full autonomy for the two medical centers on 12/31/1998.

1999

Decision to extend the Maison Médicale Esseghem on the newly acquired land. Building permit obtained.
Creation of the Maison Médicale Tournesol branch (Jette), where Manu Berquin will work.

2000

Our observations of our clientele and local needs led us to create a community center: l'Abordage ASBL.

Expansion of premises begins.

2001

Completion of the extension and inauguration (June 2001) in the presence of patients, friends and local councillors.

2009

Accidental death of Marc Hombergen, founding member and coordinator of the MME, a deep trauma for the team
Completion of the boulevard De Smet De Naeyer antenna, which remains an integral part of the MME.

After several months of management by the Board and the team, a new Coordinator (Bruno Sarrand) was hired.

2013

Start of renovation/conversion work on first floor

2014

Inauguration of the new first floor
